Avalanche warning for region Lofoten og Vesterålen Wednesday 04.01.2023

Danger level 2 - Moderate avalanche danger

Published:
Be careful in lee areas with wind deposited snow, typically behind ridges, ribs and in gullies. Especially where the wind deposited slabs are thin or soft, a slab avalanche is easier to trigger here.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Tuesday 3. January 2023

Under tregrensa gjennomvått snødekke. Noen steder er dette delvis gjenfryst, og skiføret kan være vanskelig. Over tregrensa vindpakket myk snø over hardere fokksnø. Snøfordelinga i terrenget er ujevn.

Ved bakken er det vedvarende svake lag av kantkorn.

Det ble observert noen små våte løssnøskred i Lofoten mandag, men snøfokk på toppene.

Mountain weather

Tuesday 3. January 2023

Little to no precipitation. Breeze from southeast. -14 °C to -4 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Wednesday 4. January 2023

No precipitation. Breeze from southeast. -14 °C to -2 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
